weekly round-up 35
Sep. 6th, 2009 12:56 amEhhhhhhhhh I hate carpal tunnel. I need to stop writing/drawing/coding long posts. Naturally, THIS IS ALL I HAVE BEEN DOING THIS WEEKEND.
Well, tomorrow I have a brunch date with a girl I despise. Don't you guys hate when social obligations force you into awful situations? This girl is horrible. She just moved into my neighborhood of Hipsterville, Brooklyn (aka Williamsburg). She's a total fashionista, so-pretentious-it's-possibly-a-joke, deeply insecure, and just plain sad. I already know how this is going to go: she's going to try and one-up me on fashion and brag non-stop about our careers (same industry, except she thinks high fashion makes you important while I think it's a crock of shit), name-drop every chance she gets, and pretty much just annoy the hell out of me for an hour and a half.
Luckily, I'm heading to the shooting range afterwards. I baked the guys there some brownies. Unfortunately, the brownies turned out DISGUSTING so I'm going to lie to them and say that they're vegan. HAHAHA OH GOD
Trend of the week: WHY AM I RECCING THIS?. Seriously. Gen? Established relationship? What is going on??
Weekly Round-Up
Titles in bold are extra-recommended ♥
Merlin recs
Best Intentions Aside by
derryere (R, ~8k)
Summary: Arthur/Merlin, uni!AU. Written in the first perspective from Arthur's POV. Merlin is a Harry Potter slasher and thus, ripe for harrassment.
Notes: This is an older story, posted a few months ago. I didn't rec it the first time around--possibly out of sheer laziness--but someone posted a link in last week's round-up so I reread and reconsidered :) This is some grade-A crack. The hilarity is off the charts (c'mon, it's
derryere. Everything she touches is comic gold), the boys are stupid and snarky and hate/love each other and it's pretty much perfect. So if you haven't read it already, RECTIFY THIS IMMEDIATELY.
A Hard-On For Violence by
kick_flaw (NC-17, 4k)
Summary: Arthur/Merlin, modern!AU, dub-con. Merlin ruins Arthur's chances for a football scholarship and Arthur. Is. Pissed.
Notes: Arthur's characterization is a little alarming in this--he's quite violent--but hey, dub-con is pretty hot and the sex? Smouldering. I love the AU backstory as well, with the boys growing up as neighbors and Arthur lusting after Merlin for years. Mmmmm angst. Love it.
fanmade Merlin Promo by
ras_elased (vid)
Summary: Gen. Fanmade promo for Merlin Series Two.
Notes: SHINY. Possibly a better promo than what the BBC will come up with, hahaha. This has such an epic feel to it!
Mechanic!Gwen by
yue_ix (art)
Summary: Gwen, PG. Done for a request on
camelot_fleet.
Notes: Don't ask me where all this gen is coming from. JUST ACCEPT IT. Besides, this is a great drawing. Love the detail in the background (Lord knows I can't cobble together the patience for backgrounds), love the pose, love Gwen's outfit. Love the freckles on her chest. And most of all, I love steampunk, so this drawing totally turns my crank :D

Five Times Colin Fell in Love with Bradley (the Bradley James version) by
adelagia (PG-13, 7k)
Summary: Colin/Bradley, established relationship, future fic. Bradley recounts the ways Colin fell in love with him to a dog. Colin corrects him (a lot).
Notes: I can hardly believe I'm bold-reccing such pure, unadulterated fluff and established relationship o_o It's so sappy, it's VISCOUS. On the other hand, there are so many good things about this story that I'm going to have to go with bullets, here.
- It's chock-full of one-liners and zingers that had me laughing out loud, such as: This was Katie they were talking about, after all; she and omniscience were best friends. HAHAHA I LOVE IT
- The characterization is INCREDIBLE. I mean, good RPF characterization can be found here and there, but this is something special. The anecdotes from the boys' separate youths is especially endearing.
- The format of the story is a serious boon, here. The author uses a present narrator (Bradley) to tell a story that's self-aware in its falsities, a la Big Fish or Princess Bride. It has the same effect as well, lending these anecdotes a magical quality that's storybook charming, yet humorous and quirky. When she dives back into the present and has Colin remark on Bradley's anecdotes, it's fresh and fun and, best of all, showcases the epic love between the boys.
In short? If this story can melt even my own stone heart (seriously, I'm bold-reccing established relationship??), it sure as hell can melt yours.
adelagia, honey, your stories are just getting better and better <3 I can't wait to see what else you've got coming down the pipeline!
