Thanks for bearing with me, folks! Internet problems and busy RL make for skipped round-ups, it would appear. But here it is, and there is some really, really good stuff in here. Long, meaty stories you can sink your teeth into. Unfortunately I didn't pull anything up to be put in bold, mainly because of...

Trend of the week: PLEASE STICK THE LANDING. Rushed endings don't do great stories justice D: But nonetheless, I'm really happy with what everyone's been doing lately ♥ You guys totally rock.

Weekly Round-Up
Titles in bold are extra-recommended ♥

Merlin recs

Chrono(il)logical by [livejournal.com profile] sleep_not (PG-13, 3k)
Summary: Arthur/Merlin, reincarnation!fic. Arthur is reincarnated ten years older than Merlin and gains his memories first.
Notes: As any good reincarnation!fic is, this story is epic. You got your centuries of separation, and good old fashioned UST as Arthur regains his memories first while Merlin is younger and totally oblivious. I also love the age difference here; they meet when Merlin is ten and Arthur is 21, and while there's no underage stuff, the older/younger kink is still there. In short: epic and sizzling.

So That I Might Be Where You Are by [livejournal.com profile] cherrybina (NC-17, 14k)
Summary: Arthur/Merlin, PWP. Um, wonky magic, UST, UST, UST, UST, PORN! The end.
Notes: You didn't expect me to do this round-up and not link this, did you? Of course not ;) [livejournal.com profile] cherrybina is a fandome favorite, and for good reason. I kept her summary here because it's pretty much all you need to know, haha. And I LOVE UST--of course I do--but the only thing keeping this from being bolded for me was that the conflict dragged a little longer than the reasoning for it warranted. Dampened the emotional oomph for me. But on the flip side, this is PRIME, GUILTY-PLEASURE READING. And that's why we're all here, right? Long, satisfying, angsty and porny. Run, don't walk.

Song of the Sea by [livejournal.com profile] stage_longsama (R, ~8k)
Summary: Arthur/Merlin. Uther gets a mermaid as a gift, but the mermaid is dying and Merlin wants to set it free, with Arthur's help.
Notes: This story would easily slot into the show as another episode, but with slash! I'll admit, a big reason I loved this story was Arthur's jealousy over Merlin/mermaid, haha! He's cute as a button in this, all sword-swinging man grunts, and Merlin is himself: disparaging, impulsive. This is one fic that ties back to our trend of the week though; it's got really good storytelling, but the ending is visibly rushed. Still DEFINITELY worth the read though.

Dear Idiot by [livejournal.com profile] magog_83 (PG, ~12k)
Summary: Arthur/Merlin, reincarnation!fic. Arthur is an orphan with a lovely set of parents and a mysterious guardian, who he only knows through correspondence.
Notes: This is a glorious fic. I love the premise, of Merlin communicating through Arthur as he grows up via snarky letters and tongue-in-cheek gifts (like a history book about why Merlin is better than King Arthur). It presents an incredibly intriguing plot as Arthur tries to figure out who his mysterious guardian is, and of course all ends well. I only wish there was some resolution for immortal!Merlin because it kind of goes all Benjamin Button with the boys only being the same age for a brief period in time. SAD. Also, the majority of this fic is organized by long snapshots into Arthur's life, whereas the conclusion is a quick burst of plot progression. I wish the author had kept the same tempo at the end because the build-up is extraordinary and I wanted a longer, lingering conclusion to such a wonderful story.

The Unusual Suspects by [livejournal.com profile] prfctdaze (R, ~8k)
Summary: Arthur/Merlin. A take on episode 1x08, wherein Arthur suspects something is up with Merlin and Morgana.
Notes: What can I say? I'm a slut for jealous!Arthur, and while there's no het in this fic at all, Merlin/Morgana (which Arthurs does NOT approve of) is a secret, secret kink of mine. Cute story with fluffy UST and fun characterization. Only thing: I wish the author had left off the last few lines or so. Gives it a weird, ominous ending that doesn't jive well with the rest of the story :/

Hey Juliet by [livejournal.com profile] jadestartsriots (vid)
Summary: Arthur/Merlin, G. Song done to "Hey Juliet" by LMNT.
Notes: The vidder mentions this being cheesy and insane, but she forgets to mention how it's brilliant. Cute and happy as all heck, this will make you squee out loud XD

Sorry to bother you, but I was a little confused about something. I could only find around 5000 words of the Dear Idiot fic, but your word count says it's 12k. Is there another part around here that I'm missing?

Nah, no extra part floating around.

For these rec lists when the word counts have little ~ next to the numbers it means the author didn't list a word count on the fic's page and so I just eyeball it. I guess in this case I totally lose at the jellybean counting contest, but *shrug* I'm not gonna kill myself trying to find the exact number. Thanks for pointing it out though, practice makes perfectish!

Blimey - I just spotted mine on there and got a (very nice) shock! If it's any consolation (re: the SAD comment) I hadn't thought of the Benjamin Button thing, I think I decided Merlin could look whatever age he wanted and so just chose to appear the same age as Arthur at uni and could age with him. But that isn't stated in the fic at all so it remains just my random view of it (and I could never quite decide what would have happened in the long term, with Merlin being immortal and Arthur not). As for the ending.. it was originally even shorter so I have my beta Vensre to thank for prodding me into expanding it at all (and thank god she did) but yes, sorry if it all felt a bit rushed, it wasn't intended to :)

Now i'm off to check out the other recs... :)

Oooh, it's so lovely to hear the author's own thoughts on the immortal!Merlin thing! Thanks for taking the time to explain XD And I hope I didn't come off judgey-judgey or anything, you wrote a really good story. Hence the rec.

I hope you found other fics you enjoyed!

"I hope I didn't come off judgey-judgey or anything"

Not at all!! I was hugely flattered to be on the list, as I always read it and use it to find new fics :) I just wanted to explain the age thing, because when you put it like that, it made me feel horribly sad as well!

Hey, you are not alone with the Merlin/Morgana thing :) There's a weird kind of magnetism about it...

There is, there totally is!! I think I'm too easily squicked by het to really delve into it, but I love it as a plot device for some good, old-fashioned Arthur/Merlin XD
