Whew, it's been some week! Very work-driven. Eating breathing sleeping design--it's tiring stuff, I finally gave myself a break today (usually I work on personal or freelance projects on the weekends). Slept in, went to the library, did some cleaning and slummed it at home. *stretches lazily* Good stuff.

As a heads up, I'm road-tripping to Vermont next weekend so the Weekly Round-Up may or may not be late. It'll probably still show up, clogging your f-list--I'll just have to do my porn-perusal at a ski lodge instead of at home! Heh.

Weekly Round-Up
Titles in bold are extra-recommended ♥

Of the Earth by [livejournal.com profile] newkidfan (art)
Summary: Rated G
Notes: A beautiful piece that neatly straddles the line between realism and illustration. Looks like a Japanese tattoo, bold and evocative.

Peach, Plum, Pear by [livejournal.com profile] sweetestdrain (NC-17, 14k)
Summary: How in his tenth year of rule King Arthur chose a man to take the role of Court's Magician, and how Arthur made his decision. Future!fic. Merlin's been gone from Camelot for over a decade, but Arthur hasn't forgotten him.
Notes: [livejournal.com profile] sweetestdrain is an amazing writer, and her specialty is long, well-written fics that push all the right buttons. I was completely entranced by this story; Arthur and Merlin's reunion was absolutely perfect. You've got your staple angsty!Arthur, and Merlin's characterization is mysterious, intriguing, and carefully crafted. Great romance, great storytelling.

The Walk by [livejournal.com profile] sarashina_nikki (vid)
Summary: This vid has five acts. Act I: Merlin and Arthur meet and have hate at first sight. Act II: they are stupid dorky boys at each other until eventually they become friends. Act III: they risk their lives to save one another. A lot. Act IV: there are forces working against them, Uther, Nimueh, Merlin's secret, etc. Act V: together, they can overcome anything. Done to "The Walk" by Imogen Heap.
Notes: HOLY CRAP this video totally blew my mind. The story is so skillfully constructed, with the lyrics matching the footage matching the beat. The vidder's summary is helpful though probably not even necessary, since the narrative holds up on its own (with aid of the lyrics). The vid feels epic in such a short span of time because it tells of Arthur and Merlin's entire relationship (as opposed to say, three minutes of smouldering looks and slashy scenes...which isn't a bad thing, but it's not this), from beginning to present. The end is especially impressive, with all the sound effects perfectly timed to creative footage.

Anyway, I could go on. Spectacular stuff, truly.

Dirty Laundry by [livejournal.com profile] llithilien (NC-17, 500 words)
Summary: Uther is not impressed with Merlin. Arthur is.
Notes: HOT! That is all.

Who do You Want Me to Be? by [livejournal.com profile] feathergirl89 (NC-17, ~35k)
Summary: Rentboy!Merlin AU. Merlin works for Nimueh and Arthur is a client who changes his life.
Notes: I do love a good rentboy!AU, and while normally this fandom cliche would seem out of place in this G-rated show, it's done well enough that it works. Seriously, I was thisclose to bolding (is that a verb?) this title; the only thing that stopped it short was the rushed ending. Nonetheless, that doesn't detract from the way I DEVOURED this fic; I tore through the first eleven chapters, only forced myself to put the story down because it was stupidly late and I needed to go to bed. The story is romantic and full of guilty pleasures like h/c, sex, or fluff (the fireworks scene!!). A real page-turner, through and through.

Piggybacking in Skinny Jeans by [livejournal.com profile] draykonis (art)
Summary: Rated G
Notes: The boys dressed like ghetto Londoners! The colors!! Too cute for words. Good use of the background too; gives the illustration an extra layer of polish.

Reciprocation by [livejournal.com profile] astolat (NC-17, ~8k)
Summary: He only meant to complain; you didn't take serving girls on hunting trips, and the alternative interpretation didn't even occur to him until Merlin said indignantly, "I'm not going to do that!"
Notes: The perfect guilty-pleasure read; I LOVE jealousy as a plot device, so this was like eating candy.

so are they all, all honourable men by [livejournal.com profile] seperis (NC-17, ~25k)
Summary: Merlin gets his ass kicked by a jerk noble, then is challenged to a duel. Arthur has to train him while dealing with his own feelings towards his manservant.
Notes: This is one of those stories that didn't especially ping my radar--while the plot was interesting enough, the OOC-ness and intense, inexplicable emo was getting in the way of my Arthur&Merlin squee. Still, it got an incredible response so I'm tacking it up here; that way nobody'll miss the chance to judge for themselves.

Hi! I came here from [livejournal.com profile] merlinxarthur, and yay recs! :D Thanks for sharing.

One little comment:

Reciprocation by astolat (NC-17, ~8k)
Summary: In which there are giant ears, a curious cat, backfiring spells, a stick figure Arthur, some unfortunate truths and some very welcome ones.
Notes: The perfect guilty-pleasure read; I LOVE jealousy as a plot device, so this was like eating candy.

I think you kind of mixed up the story with another story/summary. :o) That's the summary to Backfire (http://oxoniensis.livejournal.com/392440.html#cutid1) by [livejournal.com profile] oxoniensis. But, you know, they are both great fics, so the more, the merrier. :D

Thanks for the keen eye! It's so hard to keep this thing 100% blunder-free, week after week. *hangs head*

From: [identity profile] rane-ab.livejournal.com
Don't hang your head! I don't have the time to read all the fics that pop up on the comms (or elsewhere), and I depend entirely on the kindness of you reccers to find my way to good fic. You have no idea how happy I am when I see a rec post pop up somewhere. :D

I can only imagine the work that goes into it - and how difficult it is to keep all the links/stories straightened out. Any "blunders" are gladly covered with the mantle of love - I just thought you'd rather know so you could fix it. :o)

THERE IS A RENTBOY AU AND I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT I?!?!??
*thanks you profusely for rec'ing it*

So..I gather that you're some kind of design artist? (My deductive skills are out of this world, yes, I know.)

Date: 2009-02-08 02:40 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] aeroport_art.livejournal.com
HAI BB. Hahaah yes, your deductive skills are truly impressive. I studied fashion design at uni and now I'm working at Victoria's Secret in prints. I do freelance graphic design on the side for extra money, and also to keep my creativity on its toes. (The money don't hurt either.) It's tough times, a girl's gotta hustle to put food on the table! :O

What about you, what/where are you studying?

Date: 2009-02-08 04:15 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] betsyli.livejournal.com
A print job at VS? *whistles* Guys must fall for an opening like that, every single time. ;p
Extra money on the side = always goooooood.

I'm chilling it out at law school at University of Montreal. You're in NYC, right?

From: [identity profile] aeroport_art.livejournal.com
uggh, i totally lose at replying to comments in a timely manner T__T

Oooh you're studying law in Montreal?? How scholarly of you! I had a friend who went to McGill, but alas =_= I never got around to visiting her (I had four years, too! What a bad friend). I've never been to Montreal, but I hear fabulous things about it! I was just in Vermost last weekend though, is that close by?? I wanna come visit o__o

Date: 2009-02-20 04:49 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] betsyli.livejournal.com
(Don't worry, I never delete comment replies so take your time ;p)

LOL, how is it scholarly? Our school's known for selling beer in the caf, alcohol flowing at meet 'n greets and a party every other week!

Aaah, McGill. Roughly 90% of my friends go there or did (as does my boyfriend), so I'm practically a pseudo-student there. I blend in, can find classrooms, and go to their parties.

It's 6-7 hours by bus from NYC to Montreal, a bit longer if it stops in Saratoga. Come visit me! Or...I'll come visit you and crash at your place and save on hotels. OH YES BRILLIANT. *goes off to pack bags*

Date: 2009-02-20 05:00 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] aeroport_art.livejournal.com
HOMG go for it. Come crash at my place. We'll slum it in Brooklyn and pretend to be indie queens.

And don't think I won't suddenly show up at your doorstep! I'd honestly consider it some weekend. Are there any Merlin fans in the area?? Maybe we can do a mini meet-up...aka let's go get drunk in a bar with other people who like reading about gay buttsex.

Date: 2009-02-21 12:02 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] betsyli.livejournal.com
Watch your words bb because YOU NEVER KNOW. I might take you up on that...like ANYTIME. UH HUH. You have been warned. *cackles*

Any? Tons! We could totally do a semi-mini-intimate merlin party. And then eat and get drunk and watch the DVD extras with spiked popcorn. Y/y? (You can sleep in my (freezing cold) basement anytime, hon.)

From: [identity profile] aeroport_art.livejournal.com
I wanna go to Montreal!! If that's okay with you :0 As for timeline...something around there. End of April, early May. Whatever works better with your school schedule. Since I'm working, any weekend is as good as the other.

Sure thing! That timing's great for me. Though I might ditch you somewhere Sunday and go to work. You can like, hang out in a bar and watch hockey and make friends.

YAY. I'll let you know when I'M OUTSIDE YOUR FRONT DOOR. *evil cackle*

...that, or I'll e-mail you if I scrounge up the funds to make a trip up :0 And you are ALWAYS welcome to come to NY as well, no joke. My apartment's a bit of a boarding house anyway, what with all the visitors/relatives my roommate and I compile on a monthly basis.

Do eeeet.

GIRL, YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW HARD I WILL TAKE YOU UP ON THAT OFFER. And if it sounds dirty it's meant to be I'll ditch the boyfriend in the streets and come stay at your place, yeppers!

Icons are sweet love. Didn't you use to make some?

HAHA YOUR ICONS. ARE AMAZING.

Yaaay you'll come visit me!??

Didn't you use to make some?

What do you mean "used to"...I still do! Kinda. Uggh I'm just NOT a prolific fangirl. I don't know how everyone else does it, churning out fic and icons by the dozens. Don't people have jobs!?

2. Reciprocation was just like candy. Delicious, porn flavored, candy. ::licks fingers::

I'd found Peach, Plum, Pear before I read these, it's a lovely one, isn't it. Reciprocation was absolutely smoking hot, too, thankyou for pointing that out.

Interesting comment about the last one, I see what you mean - having been and read that, I think if anything it's a near-perfect fanon!Arthur we've got there. Alternates between dominant/protective and a bit thick and dorky; very keen to be Merlin's protector, while Merlin's all ethics and prettiness and gets beaten up by nasty people. Calculated to make a hardcore fangirl weak at the knees, especially for those fangirls who happen to identify with Merlin (There's a lengthy rant a few entries back in my journal on the flaws of Merlin fic, including how Merlin Is The Girl, and I think that's a subtler influence than I realise at times). But yes, that particular Arthur doesn't really do it for me either - I like him deep and interesting and properly royal, which he sadly isn't that often in fic...

Date: 2009-02-14 06:13 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] aeroport_art.livejournal.com
Ooooh, I love your whole take on characterization. It's always interesting to see what different fangirls want in their Arthur, Merlin, and Arthur/Merlin. Thanks for your awesome comments, as always!

Date: 2009-02-14 06:49 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] doomcanary.livejournal.com
Oh, I can bang on for hours about characterisation if you give me half an excuse. Everyone in my writers' group likes Overcomplicated!Arthur too, and also prefers Merlin to Arthur, but then we're all hyperintelligent nerd-girls so no surprises there :D
