The rec/review list I made a couple days ago unexpectedly resulted in a burst of friending, so here's a small re-introduction to my f-list in the form of a meme, as ganked by [livejournal.com profile] miniminkie :)

[01] Do you have the guts to answer these questions and re-post as The Controversial Survey?
i'm doing it, aren't i?

[02] Would you do meth if it was legalized?
nah

[03] Abortion: for or against it?
pro-choice. nobody's "for abortion" (i'm looking at you, 3rdDebate!McCain :P)

[04] Do you think the world would fail with a female president?
uhh, i'm not even gonna answer that. this survey's kind of silly, isn't it?

[05] Do you believe in the death penalty?
no...mainly on the grounds that it's more expensive to conduct than life imprisonment. i don't feel a lot of magnanimity towards the general human populace, sorry :0

[06] Do you wish marijuana would be legalized already?
sure. its image could use some de-glamorization (well, as "glamorous" as mj can get, haha) and government could use the taxes.

[07] Are you for or against premarital sex?
all for it

[08] Do you believe in God?
nope

[09] Do you think same sex marriage should be legalized?
YES. i feel pretty strongly about it. *gives Prop 8 the stink-eye*

[10] Do you think it's wrong that so many Hispanics are illegally moving to the USA?
yes, and only because the question includes the word "illegally". if the same proportion of immigration were to occur within the confines of law (though that number is quickly lessening, for obvious reasons), i have absolutely no qualms. america's constant influx of immigrants is what makes us dynamic, both culturally and economically.

[11] A twelve year old girl has a baby, should she keep it?
if she genuinely wants to and is lucky enough to have the means of supporting it, then of course.

[12] Should the alcohol age be lowered to eighteen?
let's make this a tentative yes. nineteen would actually be my preferred bar.

[13] Should the war in Iraq be called off?
withdrawn from, rather.

[14] Assisted suicide is illegal: do you agree?
this one's kind of tough...on the one hand i believe people should be allowed the option in the usual cases--extreme pain, terminable disease, etc. on the other hand the system could potentially be abused. if the issue ever came up, i'd have to do a lot more research to formulate an opinion.

[15] Do you believe in spanking your children?
yup

[16] Would you burn an American flag for a million dollars?
hahaha, of course. hell, i'd do it for a fiver--it's only a flag. doesn't make me any less patriotic. isn't being enterprising and capitalistic an american trait? *bats eyelashes*

[17] Who do you think would make a better president? McCain or Obama?
joebama '08, woot woot.

[18] Are you afraid others will judge you from reading some of your answers?
isn't the point of this survey to have people judge you? isn't every word that comes out of one's mouth in effect an opportunity for judgement? it'd be silly to have kittens over it.

The meme isn't as exciting as the title would suggest--a simple glance at my location (NYC), or hell, even my being here in fandom, would tell you just as much about my proclivities toward liberalism as a "controversial survey" would. And I promise I'm not the scroogey curmudgeon the survey makes me sound like! Well...not a HUGE one, at least. Maybe just a little >.> Anyway, I wanted to say hi and this meme happened to be an interesting one to come across my f-list lately.

Other news: I've kind of dove head-first into the Merlin fandom ._. Remember when I said I felt like writing again? Well...I didn't know it wasn't gonna feature the Winchester boys!! *ducks tomatoes* Can't help it. I'm about 1k words into an Arthur/Merlin story (and it already includes the words "arse" and "fuck", to give you an idea of what direction it's headed :P) and it's not stopping anytime soon. Chalk it up to my thing for crooked teeth and British accents :D

Anyway, that's me for now. I definitely want to hear a hi back! I'm not big on silence, guys. Lurkers make me anxious D:

Haha, talking about the meme hardly equates starting crap! I love discussions about this stuff.

To respond to the comment, life sentencing is--counter-intuitively--less expensive to maintain than the death penalty. If you think about how long the process of sentencing a prisoner to death can drag on, with all the appeals/trials/etc. required to effectively murder someone with an appropriately clear conscience...it starts to add up. Lawyers are expensive shit, yo :0

In conclusion: yay memmage! I look forward to yours :D

I got all excited when I saw you were writing again, but then not so much when I saw it wasn't J2/Winchestery! Merlin/Arthur? Really? I'm surprised the wooden acting in that show hasn't got you picking out splinters... ;-) I'm not judging, though, whatever floats your boat. Twisted teeth and jug ears, obviously! Just teasing, babe! I hope you will continue to write J2 etc though because you're so good at it. Feel free to pick my brains, what there is of them, if you're stuck on any Britisisms, though.

Hi! I'm one of those lurking new people that makes you nervous, so it seemed like a good idea to introduce myself somewhat. To give my answers to some of those questions looked like a good way. First I must point out that I'm Swedish, and that from a different culture stuff, I've come to realise, actually makes quite a bit difference. Even trough our culture are heavily influenced from the American one, there are a lot of stuff that makes me go: huh, surely they are exaggerating? does it really work like that over there? (sometimes I wonder if some things have become a sort of cultural 'fanon', things that are expected in TV-shows or movies but not really done by the general public. An example would be those knitted Christmas sweaters with reindeers and snowmen and what not on, does anyone actually wear them? for real?) I find it quite interesting, the stuff the makes a culture different from another.

(3) The right to have an abortion is a human right. It's every woman's decision to choose to have a baby. I think I was almost 20 when I realised that there was actual rational people arguing against that.

(7) For. I never understood the point of 'waiting for marriage'. I've yet to hear one argument that I agree on arguing for waiting. I think this is one of those questions where the cultural differences show. Here it's quite common to have a kid or two before marrying. I've read somewhere that about 50% of the children are born out of wedlock in Sweden. And it's not really uncommon to not marry at all (My parents have for example never married, but been together for 30 years. And I am not planning on marrying. ever.).

(9) Well. Yes. Of course.

(8) No. A few years ago I thought the thing through and came to the realisation that there is no God. But I'm quite fond of religion. But I believe strongly that it is important to keep the church and state separate.

(11) If a 12-yo became pregnant and had a baby and not an abortion, I assume that if she made the decision to go through with the pregnancy herself, then no-one should force her or pressure her into giving it up.

(12) Here you can buy alcohol in bars at 18 and in stores at 20. And I have no issues with that.

(14) Assisted suicide. In theory I'm for. But in practice? I think it would be very hard to regulate, and to easy to abuse. If it was legal it needed to be heavily controlled.

(15) No. Would never cross my mind. Besides It's been illegal since 1979 (looked it up on wikipedia. Apparently Sweden was first in making it illegal).

(16) Why not? Yes, even the Swedish one. Some trivia: I've heard that the proper way to dispose and old flag is to bur it- under dignified conditions of course.

(17) Sweden, as a country are a lot to the left on the political scale. Our rightmost party is a few steps to the left of the democrats, and I vote to the left. So of the two, Obama seems to be the more reasonable.

(18) Can't agree with you more.

If you wonder about anything else, just ask!

Hi there!! *handshakes vigorously*

Just to tell you, I'm soooo jealous of you, living in the Sweden and all. I hear all this glorious trivia about Scandinavian countries--unparalleled education, social liberalism, and everything down to like, cleanliness and stuff like that. It's funny, I'm like on the other side of the glass, hearing about the peninsula and wondering "Is that real? Is everybody really that peace-and-happiness over there? It sounds like Disneyland or something, some Magical Kingdom."

To answer your question, people really do wear those ugly knit Christmas sweaters. I think it's been quarantined to the older generation, unless...who knows, maybe I'll hit 40 and discover an insatiable thirst to don spangly yarns when the holidays come 'round. It might be infectious. I do love christmas...o_o

I kind of already did something like this (like two of the questions are different) so I'm gonna copy and paste that one :)

Would you do meth if it was legalized?
No.

Abortion: for or against?
I don't know if I could have one, but I'll always defend the right to choose.

Would our country fall with a woman President?
No, although I think the fact that people think it would is proof enough that our country is already failing.

Do you believe in the death penalty?
Nope. I think it's hypocritical for punishing someone for murder by committing murder. And death might let certain people get off too easy.

Do you wish marijuana would be legalized already?
Yeah. Not (solely) because I want to smoke it, but it's less harmful than alcohol, and I think it's ridiculous that alcohol is legal and pot isn't. But I think it's CRAZY that medical marijuana isn't legal yet. That needs to change immediately.

Are you for or against premarital sex?
100% for it. I think waiting for marriage puts pressure on horny people to get married before they're ready. Personally, I'd like to have sex with more than one person, but if even if someone only wants to have sex with "the one", there is still no reason to wait. If you know you're going to get married anyways, why wait? Plus, I don't even know if I ever want to get married... so that wouldn't really work.

Do you believe in God?
Yes, but not religion.

Do you think same sex marriage should be legalized?
I think it's crazy that it isn't already.

Do you think it's wrong that so many immigrants are moving to the US?
Nope. What do you think we are?

ETA: yours says illegal, and I agree with your answer when it comes to illegal immigrants.

A 12 year old girl has a baby...should she keep it?
Not unless she and her family want to and can provide the baby with the love and support it needs. Which I can't really see happening, but I guess there's always the exception.

Should the alcohol age be lowered to 18?
Maybe. I'm not huge on drinking, but just about every study shows that countries with lower drinking ages have less alcoholism, so...

Should the war in Iraq be called off?
Yes.

Do you believe in spanking your children?
Not at all. And I don't really believe in yelling at them either. My mother never yelled at me, and we have always been friends. I think having her calmly explain things to me instead of yelling or hitting allowed me to trust her enough to know I can tell her anything. I never had to lie or sneak around because we had an open and trusting relationship. Obviously there are some kids (my sister) who need to be yelled at... but I'd still never spank.

Would you burn an American flag for a million dollars?
Yes. It's just a piece of cloth, I really don't get the big deal. But seriously... it's a flag.

Obama/McCain: I am very, VERY much a supporter of Obama. And I am seriously terrified of the idea of having Palin in office.

Also, you had something about assisted suicide. I think I am for it, but don't know much about it. I think if someone is dying and in serious pain, then it should definitely be allowed. Other than that, I'd need to do more research.

Are you afraid others will judge you from reading some of your answers?
No. Obviously I believe in the things I said, so I'm not ashamed or apologetic about them. But I'm perfectly aware that not everyone agrees with me, and I have no issues with people who have different views, as long as they don't have issues with me.

I like your answer.

And on the spanking issue, I think in moderation it's as just as effective as refraining from spanking (as in, a very restrained approach can still be formative in positive ways); I'm just giving a little leeway for human error and/or extreme cases. I can count on one hand the number of times I've been hit, and can still clearly remember the reasons behind each incident, even though I was younger than ten, each time. And oh man, were they warranted--I could be a complete demon back then D: In any case, I'm extremely happy with the relationship I've had growing up with my parents (it's very similar to how you describe yours), and it just happened to include a little "big stick" policy when I was younger. I'm assuming since we both like the way we turned out, we're probably inclined to emulate our parents; OBVS I'm not gunning for abusive parent award of the year, so I see no harm either approach.

Interesting and respectful discussions, ftw \o/

ITA.

And actually, now that I think about it, my dad did spank me. But he was also mean and scary, which is probably why I think it's bad. Um, but not actually abusive, in case I wasn't clear haha.

But I understand in moderation, especially if other forms of punishment didn't work.

I love these things. I begged my flist to fill it out so I could see everyone's answers, but only like two people did and it made me sad. I have no issue with people whose views are different than mine (well, as long as they aren't hateful), and I think these are so interesting!

Oooh. We think similarly. Some questions are a bit n/a for me because I'm in the UK, but I'll give it a go :D

Would you do meth if it was legalized?
Nope. Nicotine is the only drug I need.

Abortion: for or against it?
I'm for women making their own decisions whatever they may be. I'll admit to getting a little frustrated with people who are anti-choice...

Do you think the world would fail with a female president?
NO. Um...I can't stand the female priminister we had but that's because she was WRONG not because she was female.

Do you believe in the death penalty?
No - but its not an issue for where I live.

Do you wish marijuana would be legalized already?
I'm not sure I'm bothered.

Are you for or against premarital sex?
For. It would be like clothes shopping without trying anything on otherwise :D

Do you believe in God?
No. But when I had a bereavement I became a little envious of people that do - it seemed comforting.

Do you think same sex marriage should be legalized?
YES.

A twelve year old girl has a baby, should she keep it?
If she can & if she wants to...

Should the alcohol age be lowered to eighteen?
It is!

Should the war in Iraq be called off?
I think you said it perfectly.

Assisted suicide is illegal: do you agree?
Nope. I think people should be respected enough to decide for themselves. Of course, if they cant...

Who do you think would make a better president? McCain or Obama?
If I was an American, I'd vote for Obama (but I secretly want Bartlett irrespective of who is actually running).

Curb your enthusiasm is very very awesome, except aaall the male characters with their New York accents remind me of my previous boss (from who I'm traumatised from after getting fired) so I CAN'T WATCH THE SHOW. It makes my skin crawl. VERY SAD. Even in Mad Men, Sterling freaks me out because he looks just like the guy, but it's Mad Men and Sterling isn't on thaaaat much, so I push through T__T

It was very exciting but also very tiring. The results didn't really start here till 1am. I had to settle for stopping at 3am when Ohio got called because I needed to be up at 7am. I watched it on BBC news who had hilarious guests like Christopher Hitchens who moaned that there was too much talk of results!?!
