When they offed Soo Lin I said to my roommate: "No ethnocentric episode is complete without every colored person dying."
By the end of the eppy (when I'd stopped paying attention, really) I thought they were going to just forget about the crackilicious woman, but then *BAM* EVERY LAST ONE \o/ End scene.
Study in Pink was fab enough for me to still be excited about the third episode, though. I'm just going to have to frown and bear the Blind Banker and remember: Asian girls can only be hot and studious and accented. And slutty. Oh, and disposable.
I think it really says something that at first I felt only mild resignation about all the rampaging Chinese stereotypes, and it was only when I thought about it a good while later that I went "... hey, that was actually really insulting!" In my defence, I'm Aussie-born Chinese and fairly removed from my background culture (can't speak Asian for one thing, ha) -- but still, it would be really nice to see some decent TV/movie portrayals of Asian characters once in a while. Or portrayals of Asian characters at ALL. Last Airbender, I am looking at you. e_e
I think I'm coming from the same place (well, other than the uber-sensitivity to Asian portrayals in media that had me gagging like, thirty minutes into the episode). Born in Alabama, grew up in California--can hardly speak enough Mandarin to order a cuppa. It just rankles all the more that with all that, I still can't walk down the street on a summer day in New York without getting "Nihao"s and "Konnichiwa"s and--yes--"You look like a ninja!"s attacking me left and right when I'm just trying to go about my business.
It's annoying to be continuously reminded you don't look like you belong somewhere when in fact, you kind of do :P So it doesn't help when all that day-to-day, non-malicious racism is being enforced by an oblivious hegemony. *sigh* IT'S SO HARD BEING COLORED.
That's really interesting because we don't get a lot of that down here in Australia. Or maybe I've been sheltered and I've hung out at all the right places. I can count on one hand the number of times I've been called out for my ethnicity (one finger, actually: I was walking down the street and this white guy shouted in Japanese at me: ARE YOU JAPANESE? -- eww, Japanophiles are the creepiest people ever). Maybe it's just because there's a fairly large proportion of Asians in my city, at my uni, in the research labs I've been at, etc., and when you walk around the city you pretty much see Asians EVERYWHERE. The same goes for a lot of other ethnicities here -- not to say that Melbourne is entirely racism-free, or that there isn't still an inherent white supremist attitude that comes with being a former British colony, but I guess all in all we're a relatively diverse, accepting community.
I can't imagine being constantly reminded of my race, and not only that, but people assuming that my other attributes are lessened because of it. That must really suck, huh. D: In that respect I guess I've been pretty lucky living here. Then again, I have the advantage of English being my mother tongue as well -- I think international students do have a harder time of it, since they're more likely to be maligned for their broken English/different cultural beliefs or manners. Ugh. Prejudice is not a pretty thing.
a) Suburbs. Kind of hard to catcall when everyone's driving around b) Tons of Asians. Like you said, it's not that unusual or worth pointing out with that high a percentage
On the flip side, New York is a total mosaic of ethnicities. I won't say melting pot because we don't all blend together--more like a salad, if anything. But the guys are pretty undiscriminate when it comes to hollering at girls. I didn't mean to make it sound like they're being derogatory :x
It's just that it's annoying to get Asian-related commentary via strangers of any kind. I mean like--fine, I get it. I look different. Same way a short dude or overweight chick looks different. Nobody's trying to be cruel, but it's still tiring to have to keep overcompensating for some attribute, you know? I crave anonymity!!
Unf, this is getting so talky! Almost midnight, I go to bed =_= I enjoyed this immensely, though. Btw Melbourne/Sydney is totally on my list of places to go :O I have an Aussie friend in Sydney I keep meaning to visit!
Ah! I see what you mean. Maybe it's just a result of me not identifying as either Australian or Chinese -- or maybe just me being me -- that I don't react to this stuff too much. I am the first person to admit that I can get pretty impatient with the international kids as well, even though I KNOW it must be hard for them being in a foreign country. Thankfully I'm nowhere near as bad as my -- Asian! -- ex-friend, who associates only with white people and abuses Asians ("learn some fucking English!" for example).
Uhh I think that paragraph was going somewhere but it got derailed. Sorry. XD
But yes, sleep well! <3 You should totally come visit. Just know that Sydneysiders will all tell you that Sydney is better than Melbourne, and Melbourne people will tell you that Melbourne is FAR SUPERIOR to Sydney -- but the Melbourne people are right of course. ;D ;D Though I'll let you judge that for yourself.
Haven't seen it but there's a lot of complaints going round about it so I'd say if you feel insulted? Then it is offensive. (Specially as one of my biggest pet peeves is straight people telling me what I should and shouldn't find irritating. For example - Scott Pilgrim trailer scene about lesbians. Funny because that's how a teenage boy works. Katy Perry in all her songs? Annoy the crap out of me.)
I'm not convinced she's not just doing it for the exploitation of singing 'OMG LESBIANS' which is what really bugs me. But no, or at least not the way that I do anyway. *shrugs*

Date: 2010-08-06 03:55 am (UTC)One drive-by conversation in crowded Union Square went like this:
"Konnichiwa!"
"Do you honestly think that's attractive?"
"Just trying to say hello."
"Well, I'm not Japanese."
A girl next to me: "So ignorant."
Me: "I know!! Thanks."
It was one of the most pleasant catcall exchanges I ever got into, actually :D
ok really now, BED.
